Tournament Brackets

Tournaments are based on single elimination. Tournament brackets are generated so that better players face each other at a later stage in the tournament. If you are a guest player and don't have a rating, you will have to beat the best players at an earlier stage.

-- Tournament bracket --

To determine opponents, players are arranged before the start of some of the rounds. Club members are at the top according to their place in the rankings, and guest players are arranged below them according to their registration date. The first player in the bracket plays against the last, the second against the second-to-last, and so on. This principle determines the opponents for Round-0, Round-1 and for the 1/8 finals. For the final rounds (after the round of 16), a fixed tournament bracket is also applied, which also assumes that higher-ranked players will be opponents at a later stage.

-- Round-0 --

If the number of participants is not practical for single elimination, a preliminary knockout round is held. The purpose is to reduce the number of players to a suitable value for direct eliminations: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128,... If the number of participants is a power of 2, there is no round zero.

For Round-0, the registration time for the tournament is important: the earliest registered players qualify directly for Round One.

For example: if 100 players have registered, 36 players must be eliminated (so that 64 remain). In this case, 72 players play 36 matches. The earliest 28 registered players qualify directly for the next round, while the last 72 registered players are placed in a tournament bracket and play one match.

-- Round One --

Before the start of the first round, participants are again arranged in a tournament bracket and opponents are determined.

-- Intermediate rounds --

If there are 64 or more players for Round-1, intermediate rounds are played before the 1/8 finals. Matches for these rounds are formed in the order of arrival of players from the previous round. This principle is applied up to and including the 1/16 finals.

-- Final rounds --

If there are 32 players for Round-1, this is a 1/16 final and is followed by the 1/8 final without intermediate rounds. If there are 16 players for Round-1, this is a 1/8 final.

For the 1/8 final, players are arranged according to rank, and the tournament bracket is as follows:

1/8 final 1/4 final semifinal final semifinal 1/4 final 1/8 final
player 1 player 2
player 16 player 15
player 8 player 7
player 9 player 10
player 5 player 6
player 12 player 11
player 4 player 3
player 13 player 14

If there are 8 players for Round-1, this is a quarter-final. The following bracket is applied:

1/4 final semifinal final
player 1
player 8
player 4
player 5
player 2
player 7
player 3
player 6

If there are 4 players for Round-1, this is a semi-final.

semifinal final
player 1
player 4
player 2
player 3

If there are 2 players for Round-1, this is the final match of the tournament.
